Disasters can cause damage far exceeding predictions. Adopting the CAT Model is therefore an elevation of risk management for Thailand&#8217;s insurance industry, not only helping insurance companies set appropriate premiums, but also providing in-depth data that the government can use in urban planning, and helping the public become more aware and better prepared to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CAT Model is a mathematical and statistical model that integrates scientific data, historical data, and spatial technology, such as using Digital Elevation Model data and Lidar data, a technology that uses laser light shot at the ground or structures to measure elevation and the shape of an area in detail, able to create three-dimensional maps more accurate than traditional surveys, helping make water flow route simulations more realistic. Satellite imagery is also used to analyze affected areas and structural damage, including integration with data from government agencies, to estimate potential damage value close to reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the insurance business, the CAT Model is used as a key mechanism for calculating reserve funds and risk management, while other business sectors, such as infrastructure development and urban planning, can also use the results from the CAT Model, presented in the form of risk maps (heatmaps), to build resilience to future disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Investing in the CAT Model is investing in the safety and sustainability of the country. We must cooperate \u2014 scientists, economists, the government, and the business sector \u2014 to create a model that addresses Thailand&#8217;s specific context, particularly disasters with unique characteristics, such as flash floods, runoff, or summer storms.
