The United Nations Development Programme in Thailand (UNDP Thailand), together with the Thai General Insurance Association and Road Accident Victims Protection Co., Ltd., organized a training project on safe driving and financial literacy for motorcycle taxi drivers in Bangkok, under the concept of strengthening road safety alongside building knowledge and understanding of the benefits of the insurance system and financial planning, to improve quality of life and build sustainable economic security for informal workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
UNDP operates the Insurance and Risk Finance Facility (IRFF) in 34 countries worldwide, supported by the Government of Germany through the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. In Thailand, UNDP has implemented the IRFF project together with both the public and private sectors, including the Thai General Insurance Association, through a working group on insurance and finance for risk management, to help develop an insurance and risk management system that is more accessible to the public and responsive to the real-life needs of Thai people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Anak Sereechetapong, IRFF Project Manager at UNDP Thailand, said, \u201cUNDP sees great importance in this project as a mechanism for strengthening cooperation between international organizations, the insurance industry, and related agencies, in jointly driving sustainable development goals \u2014 in terms of reducing inequality, mitigating the impact of risk, and building economic security for vulnerable groups, including informal workers who play an important role in the urban economy and transportation system, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on health and well-being, decent work, safe cities, and partnerships across all sectors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Pongpanu Damrongsiri, Executive Director of the Thai General Insurance Association, said this training project was born from the cooperation of all sectors that recognize the importance of improving the quality of life of motorcycle taxi drivers, who are an important occupational group in the urban transportation system and a key force driving the country’s grassroots economy, but who at the same time constantly face risks from road accidents and income uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Thai General Insurance Association places great importance on promoting road safety, building knowledge and understanding of the insurance system, and strengthening financial resilience for the public on an ongoing basis, which is one of the Association’s key missions in supporting the public’s ability to access, understand, and benefit from the insurance system correctly and appropriately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Pongpanu added that building insurance knowledge together with strengthening risk management skills and financial planning will help motorcycle taxi drivers prepare for unexpected events, reduce potential impacts on their lives, income, and families, and enable them to effectively access their rights to protection under the Motor Vehicle Accident Victims Protection Act and related insurance systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For this training, 100 motorcycle taxi drivers from the Phra Khanong and Bang Na districts participated. The content covered safe driving, cultivating responsible road use awareness, knowledge of legal rights and benefits, as well as knowledge of saving, income management, financial planning, and building financial discipline, to help strengthen stability in their occupation and long-term livelihoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Association is confident that this cooperation will not only be a short-term training program, but will be the starting point for building a network of cooperation between partners at both the national and international levels, to jointly raise road safety standards, promote access to the insurance system, and build financial resilience for the public, especially high-risk road users, so that they can pursue their occupation and live their lives more securely, safely, and sustainably,\u201d said Dr. Pongpanu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Kasem Sangphirom, Assistant Managing Director of Road Accident Victims Protection Co., Ltd., said that according to data from www.thairsc.com, the Road Accident Data Center, in 2025 there were 12,537 deaths from road accidents, with working-age people between 25-60 years old accounting for as much as 58.86% of deaths, and “motorcycles” being the leading cause of death, at as high as 83.17%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therefore, the Road Accident Victims Protection Company, as an organization established under the Motor Vehicle Accident Victims Protection Act, is very pleased with this cooperation, which will help build awareness of the rights to protection and benefits of compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor), as well as safe driving, for motorcycle taxi drivers, who are a high-risk group of daily motorcycle users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the company’s data, many accident victims do not receive legally mandated compensation because the vehicle involved in the accident did not have compulsory motor insurance, meaning these accident victims do not receive protection or the benefits they are entitled to under the law, forcing them to pay for their own medical expenses and seek compensation directly from the vehicle owner\/driver who caused the accident. Purchasing compulsory motor insurance is an important duty that every vehicle user must fulfill every year, as a guarantee that everyone will receive timely assistance in the event of an accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therefore, purchasing compulsory motor insurance is a social responsibility that every vehicle owner must comply with by law, because when an accident occurs, all accident victims will receive protection under the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
